Plane lands on Interstate 840 near Battleground Avenue, troopers say
THIS IS BREAKING NEWS AND WE ARE FOLLOWING BREAKING NEWS IN GREENSBORO. CREWS ARE AT THE SCENE OF A PLANE THAT LANDED ON INTERSTATE 840. PUT THIS ON THE MAPS FOR YOU TONIGHT. THIS IS NEAR THE BRYAN BOULEVARD EXIT, RIGHT OUTSIDE THE PIEDMONT TRIAD INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT. THAT’S ALSO WHERE WE FIND OUR KARA PETER. SHE IS LIVE AT THE SCENE. KARA. WE ARE NOW IN HOUR TWO WITH THIS INVESTIGATION. WHAT DO WE KNOW SO FAR. WELL, DAVONTE, WE JUST GOT SOME NEW INFORMATION SECONDS BEFORE COMING ON AIR. ACCORDING TO THE GREENSBORO FIRE DEPARTMENT, TWO PEOPLE WERE INJURED IN THIS EMERGENCY PLANE LANDING. I’M GOING TO STEP ASIDE AS I SHOW YOU AND TELL YOU WHAT WE’RE LOOKING AT. YOU CAN SEE A LOT OF INVESTIGATORS AROUND THAT SMALL ENGINE PLANE. AS THE SOUTHBOUND RAMP IS BLOCKED OFF. FOR THOSE THAT ARE DRIVING IN THIS AREA, WE ALSO GOT SOME NEW INFORMATION ON THIS ABOUT 15 MINUTES AGO. ACCORDING TO THE FAA, A SINGLE ENGINE PLANE EXPERIENCED ENGINE FAILURE WHILE APPROACHING PTI AIRPORT. THAT’S WHEN THE PILOT LANDED HERE ON INTERSTATE 840 AROUND 8 P.M. AND WE ALSO KNOW, AGAIN, ACCORDING TO GREENSBORO POLICE, THAT THE I-840 SOUTHBOUND RAMP IS CLOSED AND TRAFFIC IS BEING REDIRECTED TO BRYAN BOULEVARD FOR THE TIME BEING. SO AGAIN, WHILE WE’VE BEEN OUT HERE, WE’VE BEEN SEEING THIS THESE WESTBOUND LANES HERE AT I-840 BLOCKED OFF. WE’VE SEEN INVESTIGATORS WALKING TO AND FROM THIS AREA. AGAIN, WE’VE SEEN A LOT OF CAUTION TAPE, A LOT OF INVESTIGATORS IN THIS AREA. SO WE ARE STILL TRYING TO LEARN MORE DETAILS. AGAIN REGARDING THIS INCIDENT. At least one person was injured after a plane touched down on a busy Triad interstate, according to troopers with the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.Federal Aviation Administration officials said a single-engine Beechcraft BE35 experienced engine failure while on the way to Piedmont Triad International Airport in Greensboro. The pilot landed on Interstate 840 around 8 p.m. on Wednesday. According to Greensboro PD officials, at least one person was injured as a result, but the sustained injuries are minor. Officials said the I-840 southbound ramp is closed and traffic has been diverted onto Bryan Boulevard. The FAA is investigating.
