Although not found in The Bible, the concept of the 39 categories of disease is a religious idea. It is not how the categories of disease is broken down by modern science. The concept of the 39 categories of disease relates to the 39 lashings given to Christ previous to his death. The belief is that Christ bore a stripe for every disease known to man, so they could be healed from them. The concept was popularized when it was published in the AMA by Dr. Dale A. Robbins. There is no list currently available to see what the 39 categories of disease are that Christ may have borne lashings for.

However, there are 17 disease classifications recognized officially by the ICP. They are as follows:

  • Certain conditions originating in the perinatal period
  • Complications of pregnancy, childbirth and the puerperium
  • Congenital abnormalities
  • Diseases of the blood and blood-forming organs
  • Diseases of the circulatory system
  • Diseases of the digestive system
  • Diseases of the genitourinary system
  • Diseases of the musculoskeletal system and connective tissue
  • Diseases of the nervous system and sense organs
  • Diseases of the respiratory system
  • Diseases of the skin and subcutaneous tissue
  • Endocrine, immune, nutritional and metabolic diseases
  • Injury and poisoning
  • Mental disorders
  • Neoplasms
  • Symptoms, signs, and ill-defined conditions
  • Parasitic diseases

These are further broken down and categorized into something like a Dewey Decimal system.
